Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Outcomes Project

American Indian (AI) women, in Montana and Wyoming, have one of the highest incidence rates of breast cancer in the US. In addition, AI women under-utilize screening facilities that could help detect breast and cervical cancer sooner so preventive measures could be taken. The study is funded by Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) and divided into two phases. The purpose of Phase I is to determine the prevalence of breast and cervical cancer among AI women by service unit in the Billings area, identify factors associated with not being screened for breast and/or cervical cancer, and identify follow-up and referral patterns following an abnormal mammogram or cytology result. The purpose of Phase II is to describe patterns of breast cancer treatment including type of treatment and distance to treatment, identify follow-up and referral patterns of AI women with breast cancer, and describe the survival of AI women with breast cancer.

Updates:

  • Phase I: Overall, 1292 charts were abstracted from AI women ages 20 and older on 8 reservations
  • Phase II : Approximately 50 AI women diagnosed with Breast Cancer during 1990-2005 are being analyzed and is pending final dataset for reporting
