Summer Youth Development Camp
 |
The Summer Youth Development Camp was a week-long camp to empower youth and provide them tools tounderstand public health epidemiology and to develop interventions in their communities using a positive community norm framework. RMTEC worked with Tribal Health Departments to invite up to 4 youth from each of the 10 MT and WY Tribes to participate. To make the epidemiologic concepts relevant, and to use the opportunity to return data to the Tribal youth, RMTEC used Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA), and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) data to illustrate the behaviors and diseases that exist in the youth's communities. Context area speakers on the topics of alcohol, tobacco, suicide, and sexual health were brought to the camp to provide prevention messages. An expert in creating positive community norms messaging assisted with the camp for the entire week to infuse the practice of positive messaging (translating data to prevention messages) into epidemiologic concepts. |
